Healthcare Owners, Here’s How You Can Help Your Construction Project Go More Smoothly

October 8th, 2019

Stress. Anxiety. Loss of sleep. We get it.

Construction is exciting but it can also be extremely stressful, especially in an occupied healthcare facility. You have a lot of pressure on you to deliver this project for your institution. The truth is, some projects do go more smoothly than others. Here’s how you can help set up the construction team for success, creating a less stressful project for you.

Take a team outlook.

Our successes and failures impact the whole team. When projects go best, the owner does all they can to make our job easier. In turn, we do the same. This includes holding everyone accountable – both the construction team and the healthcare facility’s workers. As the contractor, we will have constant job site supervision and will hire subcontractors who are a good fit for a healthcare project. As the owner, you need to ensure that your in-house maintenance and engineering departments are working closely with us.

Communicate clearly.

Provide the contractor with guidelines or a handbook for performing construction work in your facility. Healthcare projects in occupied spaces are very complex and typically include a dynamic schedule requiring off-hours work. Logistics plans are also complex and ever-changing throughout the course of the project. We can plan our work much better if you give us standardized guidelines, otherwise we have to figure out your formal and informal processes as we go and change the planned work accordingly.

Getting us information quickly is also a must. If we have questions or need clarification on something, the sooner you respond, the better. Have all your finishes picked out ahead of time. Changes can be detrimental to the project’s continuity because of lead times and sequencing of the work.

Be sincere.

Finally, we need to know that we can count on you to be open and honest with us. We’ll be working together for many months in a high risk atmosphere. When everyone is looking out for one another, people perform better.

We’d love to partner with you to make your next construction project a success. Contact us to find out how we can help you.
