HyAxiom - Charter Oak Combined Heat And Power Project

Bristol, CT

ARCHITECT: Innovative Construction & Design Solutions   |   SIZE: 28,000 SF | 9.6 Megawatts

Description

The Charter Oak Combined CHP project consisted of building a three-story steel and concrete structure to house 21 fuel cells, each weighing 60,000 lbs, and their 21 cooling modules. This is HyAxiom’s largest U.S. fuel cell project to date and the first multi-story fuel cell installation in the U.S.

The facility provides clean, combustion-free baseload electricity capable of powering between 8,500 and 10,000 households. The hot water byproduct from the fuel cells is captured in a closed-loop system and runs through a 1.5-mile thermal loop that supplies heat and hot water to the University of Bridgeport, Bassick High School, and local businesses before returning to the site. Capturing and reusing this hot water achieves efficiencies of over 80% compared to 50% for a conventional technology.
