Mentoring Matters: A Father-Son Experience

September 24th, 2020

Mark Giglio, senior project superintendent, got the experience of a lifetime while overseeing construction of a new gymnasium and school house at Riverbend School in Natick, MA. His son Tony was assigned to the project as assistant project superintendent. They had worked on a project together before, but this time, Mark was directly responsible for training and mentoring Tony.

Mark and Tony didn’t publicize their father-son relationship, but most people figured it out. Mark said many of the older workers on the project thought it was great Mark and Tony were working together. For the younger workers, the reaction was different: Many said they could never work with their dad.

Tony said he didn’t view Mark as his dad while working but instead as his boss, the senior superintendent on the project, and he did his best to treat him that way. Mark took the same approach, treating Tony as a younger employee he was mentoring. However, Mark admits he may have crossed the line once or twice and Tony let him know!

Mark and his wife have built a strong family culture, so Tony often gets together with his parents and siblings for dinner on the weekend or to hang out for the day. This gave Tony and Mark plenty of time to discuss the Riverbend project and come up with plans and solutions for the upcoming work. (Yes, the rest of the family may have asked them to stop talking about work once or twice!)

Throughout the nine-months working together, they both taught the other valuable lessons. Mark learned not to underestimate what Tony can do. At first Mark was staying involved in everything, but slowly he realized Tony was perfectly capable and if Tony had questions, he would ask. So, not surprisingly, Tony said he learned to ask for help when he needed it and to use all the resources available at C.E. Floyd.

The end results of the project speak for themselves. The project team earned the CO two weeks early and came in under budget, even while working through COVID-19.

Mark and Tony will always remember the school they built together!
