The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts Preconstruction Case Study

We’re working with The Food Bank to build a new 63,000-square-foot headquarters, which is twice the size of its current facility. This project marks a dramatic point of growth for The Food Bank. The building will be a net zero emitter, meaning that the facility will generate all its energy needs.

Converting a mid-nineteenth-century Bank into a School

When creating a master plan for the school, the abutting Southport Savings Bank building wasn’t included. However, when the opportunity to purchase the building came about, The Southport School jumped at the opportunity.
The Southport School, Peterman Architects and C.E. Floyd Company collaborated to convert The Southport Savings Bank into the Arts and Music Building. The Southport Savings Bank was erected in 1863-65 and had been the longest continuously operating bank building in the United States. According to the Library of Congress, the original building specifications for the mason and carpentry work have been preserved and are valuable records of mid-nineteenth-century construction techniques.
The Southport School was committed to restoring the building’s historic exterior, while updating the interior to suit the needs of the school. Although a relatively small project, it was complex and full of challenges that needed to be addressed around accessibility, life safety, building systems, structural changes, and the removal of the granite vault in the core of the building.

Partnering in education

Learning by doing is a philosophy that dominates at Inly School. So it came as no surprise that the school wanted to make the construction project an extension of the classroom. Because of the project’s central location on campus, we were easily able to take advantage of the construction work and involve the entire school community from day one – and from the moment the kids stepped out of the car in the morning.

Case Study: Bringing a Vision to Life at Middlewoods of Newington

The word construction made Middlewoods of Newington Executive Director Kathy Braga twitch, and here it was again. United Methodist Homes (UMH) was planning a small construction project at her community: upgrading interior finishes and renovating the reception area and common spaces. The project sounded great, but Braga wanted more. She decided to go for it, so she shared her vision with C.E. Floyd Company and edm CT. They didn’t laugh at her, instead they looked her in the eye and told her it could be done. They would find a way to give Braga everything she wanted and to have the project make sense financially for UMH. Suddenly, Braga wasn’t twitching anymore.

Don’t all schools have to have a Master Plan? The short answer is no. The term Master Plan often assumes growth, expansion, new buildings, changes to circulation and open space systems. This project label can create perceptions, expectations, and, believe it or not – limits about the process and outcomes that are unknown at the outset of the project.

Construction Planning for Success: Meeting a Nearly Impossible Schedule

The other General Contractors who submitted proposals for the Middle School addition and renovation told Fairfield Country Day School the project couldn’t be done. We were the lone contractor who committed to meeting the schedule. We did it!

C.E. Floyd Project Receives Cambridge Preservation Award!

One of our recent projects at Lesley University received a “Preservation Award” by the Cambridge Historical Commission last night! C.E. Floyd worked with Perry and Radford Architects to complete this gut interior and exterior renovation of a dormitory in Lesley’s Threshold Program.

Derby Academy Hard Hat Tour: Connecting classroom learning to the real world

Recently Derby Academy, in Hingham, MA, hosted an educational ‘hard hat’ tour of the school’s new Innovation Center for students, which is now complete. Students of all ages visited the construction site and wore construction hats to go through the building. C.E. Floyd and Olson Lewis + Architects worked together to create an interactive experience for all ages by demonstrating connections between the skills students learn in the classroom with the real world applications of them in the construction site.

Standing Strong: Beach Pavilion Weathers Hurricane Sandy
July 1st, 2013
It’s beach time! Unfortunately, the Penfield Pavilion in Fairfield, Connecticut is closed for the season after suffering substantial damage to its foundation during Hurricane Sandy. As a result, 89 private events at the pavilion had to be cancelled. Sadly, the $3.3 million dollar building just opened in 2011.
