20 Years at C.E. Floyd - Q & A with Joe McCoy

January 29th, 2015 by Catie McMenamin

Joe McCoy, director of business development, just celebrated 20 years with C.E. Floyd Company. Over that time, he’s spent the equivalent of 625 days commuting. So what keeps him going? I sat down with him to find out.

What’s your favorite memory from your time at C.E. Floyd so far?

Over 20 years there are so many memories it’s hard to pick a single favorite. We’ve won some great projects, worked for so many wonderful clients and met so many people. However, my most special memories involve the times when everyone in the company gets together outside of the office: Field vs. Office company softball games (I recall the Office winning three in a row – still undefeated!), holiday parties or summer cook-outs, pool parties at Norm and Nancy’s house. One memory I have is when I was told I HAD to buy some golf clubs!!

Do you have a favorite project?

We have so many great clients and projects, many with whom we have been able to establish repeat relationships and genuine friendships, but I don’t have any favorite projects – although the Spencer Brewery stands out in my mind.

What do you like most about working here?

A priority at C.E. Floyd Company has always been to provide exceptional services to our customers. Every employee supports our guiding principle of Performance with Integrity – maintaining our reputation for meeting deadlines, staying under budget, doing quality work, paying our bills and playing fair.

How has technology impacted business development?

I started off with a Rolodex (names and telephone numbers), Day Timer (personal meeting calendar), Dodge Report (lead generation), computer, street map atlas and a calculator – now, it is all on my phone!! The amount of data that is available online for researching markets, identifying trends, evaluating opportunities and influencing long range planning is staggering. I can only imagine what the next 20 years will be like!

How has the company changed since you first started?

Well, the most obvious changes are that we opened an office in Connecticut and established a significant presence in several new markets. The most refreshing thing, though, is not what has changed, but what has remained constant. C.E. Floyd Company has always remained true to our focus on team building – everyone is given their chance to contribute to a project’s success and the Company’s success – and personal development continues to be valued and encouraged.

Who is the coolest person you’ve met through this job?

I met Carl Yastrzemski in the elevator at Fenway Park going to the company seats – if that counts!
