C.E. Floyd employees give back

September 26th, 2017 by Catie McMenamin

At C.E. Floyd we’re thankful to be given a day to give back to a non-profit organization of our choice. Two of our employees recently volunteered with One for Health Foundation and The Wish Project.

Lynn Larsen: One for Health Foundation

Lynn volunteered at One For Health's third annual WellComm event at Babson College in April. WellComm is a day of wellness designed specifically for children ages 8-12. The children participate in a wide variety of activities focusing on holistic health including a dodgeball fest, challenging games, fun and engaging nutritional education, yoga instruction, and other activities.

At this year’s event, Lynn helped manage the overall operations of the day. She helped finalize the schedule, ensured event signage and directions were posted around campus, set up the food and drink area, organized different activity areas, welcomed participants and directed them to events, made sure workshop leaders had the supplies they needed, oversaw college student volunteers and did anything else that was needed. Despite her busy day, she still had time to participate in a zumba session!

One for Health Foundation helps children adopt a healthy lifestyle by providing innovative wellness programs and workshops that equip them with the knowledge and skills to develop and retain healthy habits. Through WellComm, One for Health intends to bring children, college students and the local community together in a fun wellness experience.

“The ultimate idea is to establish a plan for any group, school, or organization to help them organize a Wellcomm event in their area,” said Lynn, who was instrumental in planning and organizing the first Wellcomm in 2015. “We want to spread the word that health – particularly children’s health – is too important to ignore. By coming together and teaching children to make better choices, we can give these children the educational foundation for a healthier and stronger future.”

Catie McMenamin: The Wish Project

C.E. Floyd has been supporting The Wish Project’s backpack drive for the past few years. Catie wanted to learn more about the organization, so when she dropped off the company’s backpack donations in August, she and her five-year-old son stayed to volunteer.

“We had a great experience,” Catie said. “The volunteer coordinator we worked with was excellent and kept my son busy all morning with tasks he could complete successfully. We’ll definitely be coming back here again next year!”

Catie and her son looked through the backpacks that had been donated with all the supplies included to make sure nothing was missing or nothing extra was in the pack. Then they processed incoming donations and sorted them into the correct bins to make it easier for the volunteers who were filling the empty backpacks.

The Wish Project provides those in need in the Merrimack Valley with basic furniture, home goods and baby goods, while helping the planet by recycling used goods. Only when people have their basic needs met can they move forward and out of the social services system. By providing basic goods to people in crisis, The Wish Project helps end needless suffering in the short term, while helping to end homelessness in the long term. Once the basic needs are met, individuals and families can begin to work towards improving their lives and gaining independence from government subsidies.
