The Empowered Employee

What makes a company great? In this competitive labor market, this is something we are all scrambling to decode, especially in the booming construction sector. Is it a workplace with a fully-stocked kitchen, ping pong tables, and beer on tap? Or is it one with sleek modern offices and polished marble floors?

The answer for the current job seeker is neither so superficial nor simple. What attracts and retains employees aren’t the amenities and perks or even the free beer; it’s having the opportunity to impact the direction of their company. But how do you empower your employees while still retaining control? 

Our strategy was to enlist the services of an external survey company to learn where we’re meeting expectations and where we need to improve. Following the survey we formed a group represented by employees from all departments as well as both field and office. By including a diverse group we heard a variety of viewpoints and perspectives instead of from the usual executives.

The invaluable feedback from our internal survey analysis group was used to create a concise list of action items that has been used to create a better C.E. Floyd, as envisioned by the employees that work so hard to make it great. We have organized company volunteer days, created a peer-nominated recognition program that highlights those employees that go above and beyond, and implemented a new quarterly review process that empowers employees to take charge of their career by allowing them the space to set their own goals, ask for more training, or simply discuss any pertinent issues. This consistent and candid process gives employees the agency that is too often missing in modern day workplaces. 

When you make room for your employees to shape and influence your company you create an organization that is in tune with the changing world and a workforce that is empowered. Studies show that when your employees feel their opinions are truly valued, they are happier, more productive, and report being overall more satisfied with both their company and job role. Our empowered employees then, in turn, work to make your project more successful.
